Seedbox Comparison

Bytesized AppBox vs Hetzner

Two very different ways to run Plex and a download stack. The Bytesized AppBox is a managed, pre-configured platform. A Hetzner server is cheap raw hardware you build, secure, and police yourself. Here is which one fits you.

★★★★★ 5.0/5 on Trustpilot

A managed media server in under 2 minutes. One-click Plex, Jellyfin, Sonarr and 50+ apps, preconfigured to work together, on a network built for this workload. GPU-accelerated 4K transcoding, real support, and no abuse desk to dodge. Best for almost everyone who wants it to just work.

Hetzner

Excellent value on raw dedicated and cloud hardware with full root access. But there are no one-click apps, no media tuning, and no GPU transcoding option, and Hetzner actively enforces copyright complaints. You build, secure, and maintain everything yourself.

These are two different things

What you are actually choosing between

  • A managed product vs a bare server. The Bytesized AppBox is a finished platform: apps, configuration, and tuning are done for you. Hetzner sells you the hardware and an operating system. Everything on top is your job.
  • Built for this workload vs general purpose. Bytesized provisions storage, network, and apps specifically for media and downloads. A Hetzner box is a blank general-purpose server you have to shape into one.

The part people miss

  • Hetzner enforces copyright complaints. Hetzner is not a torrent-friendly host. Abuse notices are passed on and repeat complaints can get a server suspended or an IP locked. A purpose-built seedbox is designed around this workload instead.
  • Fast hardware is not a fast setup. Cheap cores and disks do not configure Plex, the arr stack, or remote streaming for you. The time and skill to build and maintain that is the real cost of DIY.

Feature Comparison

Feature Bytesized AppBox Hetzner (DIY server)
What you get Managed, preconfigured app platform Raw server + OS, you build the rest
One-Click Apps 50+ preconfigured Manual install via SSH
Setup Time Under 2 minutes Hours, plus ongoing upkeep
GPU 4K Transcoding GPU AppBox Not offered for media
Torrent / Copyright Stance Built for the workload Abuse notices enforced, IP-lock risk
Management Bytesized Panel, no terminal Full root, you administer it
Support Tickets + active Discord Infrastructure only, not your apps
Raw Hardware Value Strong, purpose-built Excellent price per core and TB
Full Root Access SSH + rootless Docker Complete control
Trustpilot Rating 5.0/5 (248 reviews) Strong for hosting, general purpose
Bytesized wins on: one-click apps, media tuning, GPU transcoding, setup speed, support, torrent-workload fit
Hetzner wins on: raw price per core and per TB, and full control for those who want to build it all themselves

Bytesized AppBox

Strengths

  • Everything is done for you. Plex, Jellyfin, Sonarr, Radarr and 50+ apps install in one click, preconfigured to work together. No OS to harden, no packages to compile.
  • A network and storage built for this. Provisioned for media and downloads rather than a blank general-purpose box you have to tune.
  • GPU 4K transcoding. The GPU AppBox plays 4K smoothly on any device. Hetzner has no media GPU option.
  • Real support and a workload-friendly stance. Tickets and an active Discord, and infrastructure designed around the torrent and media workload.

Considerations

  • Not the cheapest raw hardware. If your only metric is euros per core or per TB, unmanaged hardware will look cheaper on paper.
  • Less low-level control than a bare server. You get SSH and rootless Docker, but it is a managed platform, not a blank machine.

Hetzner

Strengths

  • Outstanding hardware value. Some of the best price per core and per TB available, especially on dedicated and auction servers.
  • Full control. Complete root on a real machine. If you want to build and run everything yourself, few hosts give you more.
  • Reliable, reputable infrastructure. A well-run European provider with a strong general hosting reputation.

Considerations

  • No one-click apps or media tuning. Plex, Jellyfin, and the arr stack are all manual installs and configuration over SSH.
  • Copyright complaints are enforced. Hetzner passes on abuse notices and repeat complaints risk suspension or an IP lock. It is not built for the torrent workload.
  • No GPU transcoding for media. 4K transcoding falls back to CPU, which struggles with multiple streams.
  • You are the support team. Hetzner supports the hardware, not your Plex setup, your automation, or your configuration.
