BTSync on a Seedbox: Peer-to-Peer File Sync

BTSync (now Resilio Sync) is the proprietary peer-to-peer file sync tool BitTorrent Inc launched in 2013. Mostly replaced by Syncthing for new setups. Here's the Bytesized setup.

What BTSync Is

BTSync (rebranded Resilio Sync) is a peer-to-peer file sync tool from the BitTorrent Inc team. Files sync directly between your devices, no cloud middleman, similar architecture to Syncthing.

It's proprietary (closed source), and the free version has had feature limits added over the years. The paid Pro tier removes them.

Should You Use BTSync or Syncthing?

Honest comparison:

For new setups, Syncthing. BTSync makes sense if you're already a Pro subscriber or you specifically prefer the Resilio mobile experience.

Why Run It on a Seedbox?

Same drivers as any sync tool:

Installing BTSync

Open the Bytesized Panel, find BTSync in the app catalog, click install. The panel handles the install, the web UI, the URL.

Click "Open" to land on the BTSync dashboard.

First-Run Setup

  1. Set the admin login. First-run prompts.
  2. Add a folder. Pick a folder under your home directory and BTSync generates a sync key.
  3. Share the key with another device. Install BTSync on your phone or laptop, paste the key, the folder syncs.

The sync model is folder-based. Each folder has its own key; you share keys with whichever devices you want included.

Read-Only vs Read-Write Keys

BTSync supports two key types:

Generate the appropriate key per direction.

Common Gotchas

Free version limits. The free tier caps the number of folders you can sync. If you hit it, either trim folders or upgrade to Pro.

Devices not finding each other. BTSync uses BitTorrent-style peer discovery. NATs can interfere; the public tracker fallback usually handles it. Direct port forward for one side speeds things up.

Conflicts piling up. Same as Syncthing, BTSync can create conflict files when both sides edit at once. Clean them up; reasons are usually clock skew or simultaneous saves.

Mobile sync slower than expected. iOS background sync is OS-throttled. Open the app and let it run.
