Plex made major changes in 2025-2026 that directly impact anyone running a Plex server on a seedbox. Here's the complete breakdown.

Remote Streaming Now Requires a Paid Plan

The biggest change: as of March 2026, remote streaming is no longer free. To stream personal media outside your home network, you need one of:

• Plex Pass: $6.99/month, $69.99/year, or $249.99 lifetime
• Remote Watch Pass (new): $1.99/month or $19.99/year — for viewers who don't own the server

This affects every seedbox user. Your Plex server runs in a data center, so all access is remote. Without a paid plan, you can't stream from your own seedbox.

If you already have a lifetime Plex Pass, you're grandfathered in — nothing changes for you. Your friends and family viewers still need their own Remote Watch Pass unless you add them to your Plex Home (Plex Pass feature).

Price Increases

Old pricing was $4.99/month or $119.99 lifetime. The new pricing represents a 40% monthly increase and a 108% lifetime increase.

App Redesign

Plex rolled out a completely new mobile interface:

• Bottom tab navigation (replacing the hamburger menu)
• Dedicated Library and Live TV tabs
• Watchlist more prominent
• Discover/streaming content pushed harder

The new design works well but clearly pushes Plex's free ad-supported streaming alongside your personal library.

Deprecations

• Music playback: Being separated into a dedicated app (Plexamp remains)
• Photos: Playback being moved out of the main app
• Some legacy agents: Plex is consolidating metadata sources

What This Means for Seedbox Users

You Need a Paid Plan

If you're running Plex on a seedbox (including Bytesized), all your streaming is "remote." You need at minimum a Remote Watch Pass ($1.99/mo) for yourself, or a Plex Pass ($6.99/mo) if you want hardware transcoding and sharing features.

Consider Jellyfin

Jellyfin is the free, open-source alternative that:

• Has no paywall — remote streaming is free forever
• Requires no account — no plex.tv dependency
• Offers free hardware transcoding (no Plex Pass equivalent needed)
• Has no telemetry

The Tailscale Workaround

Some users bypass the remote requirement by using Tailscale (a mesh VPN) to make their seedbox appear as a "local" device. This technically works but:

• Adds complexity
• Requires Tailscale on every viewing device
• May break in future Plex updates
• Doesn't help your friends/family viewers

We don't recommend relying on workarounds for something this fundamental.
